Saturday, January 13, 2018, Sparkle Yoga celebrated their grand opening, but with a bit of a twist. Owner and instructor Jennifer Wallis connected with the Northern Nevada SPCA to raise donations and spread information about the SPCA. Combining the SPCA and yoga was a perfect fit with the grand opening’s highlight moment — a class on yoga with your own dog.
Kim Arnatt, an instructor with 10 years’ experience, told me that her dog, Yodi a Boston Terrier, had always laid on her yoga mat. After seeing other people doing yoga with their dogs, she decided to give it a try.
When it came time for the class to start, dogs and owners took to their mats, and Arnatt explained that some of the moves would be different depending on the size of the dog — the smallest dog was no larger than a guinea pig, and there was a tie between a Pitbull and a Yellow lab for the largest dog.
Despite it being a first time for both dogs and owners, the class immediately calmed and went on with no real distractions. Laughter continued as dogs and owners moved through each position. One particularly relaxed older dog decided, mid position, to attempt a nap much to the delight of the surrounding participants.
I asked Taylor Tremayne, who was kind enough to allow me to photograph from her mat’s position, what her and her dog Nova had thought of the class. Tremayne told me that she has three years of yoga experience but this what her first time doing dog yoga.
She said she had a great time. By the look of it, so did Nova.
